ASB's Early Childhood educational program is based on the belief that children have developmental needs in the physical, intellectual/cognitive, creative, self-concept and social/emotional areas. Our skill-based curriculum includes activities which promote gross as well as fine motor skills, self-help, cognitive, language/communication and social emotional skills. Skills are taught through a mixture of language, arts, math and science, plus physical and social activities.
Play is an important element to bear in mind. It is present in all the developmental stages of young children. Learning through play is as important as learning how to read and write. Play means exploration, creativity, curiosity, engagement, positive self-esteem, risk taking, decision making and independence, as well as team work. Play is in actual fact children's work.
We make every effort to create a balance between teacher-directed and child-initiated activities, thus allowing young children to become active and involved learners. Close ties between family and school is therefore crucial to the optimal growth and development of our students.
Our children are immersed in an international community, which offers a diverse linguistic and cultural experience. Since most children are non-native English speakers, many of the activities focus upon increasing English vocabulary and use. This is accomplished by providing a stimulating and appealing environment. Children are encouraged to explore and 'practice' language and communication skills, with a wide range of developmentally appropriate materials and activities. Native English speakers benefit from the language rich environment and curriculum, which help to expand their English skills. These students have an opportunity to learn and/or improve their Spanish at the same time.
